Eastern Antioquia
Guatapé "Thousand Colors Town"
Magical Realism in the Colombian Mountains… Straight from the pages of a García Márquez story, Guatapé is a real-life magical town, a “mountain village with a piece of sea in its heart”. The town takes its name from the legendary cacique Guatapé, who once ruled over much of this land.
This is a top tourist destination in Antioquia, thanks to its two main attractions: the Guatapé Reservoir and the famous zócalos. The Río Nare Reservoir, built in 1970, is the largest body of water in Colombia, flooding 6,240 hectares and even requiring the relocation of the town center. This transformation turned the surrounding mountains into islands, forever altering the region’s landscape.
