Nicknamed "The City of Eternal Spring", Medellín enjoys a delightful year-round climate thanks to its unique location. Nestled in the mountains at a moderate altitude near the equator, the city avoids extremes in temperature.
- Medellín is located in the northwest of Colombia, on the central mountain range, at an altitude of 1,479 meters above sea level.
- Its coordinates are: 6°14′41″N 75°34′29″O
- It is part of the Aburrá Valley, a subregion made up of ten municipalities in total.
- It is crossed from south to north by the Medellín River.
- Its total area is 382 km2, of which 112 km2 are urban and 270 rural. Comparatively, its built-up area is only twice as large as the island of Manhattan in NY.
- The metropolitan area covers an area of 1,152 km2.
- It is the capital of the department of Antioquia, which together with Caldas, Risaralda and Quindío, form the region known as ‘Paisa’.
- Located far inland, it has a land connection to the Caribbean Sea, accessible through the port city of Turbo, approximately 6 hours away by car.
