Getting to Medellín

By Plane...

Many airlines have domestic and international flights to Medellín...

If you arrive at José María Córdova International Airport (IATA code: MDE), located in the neighboring municipality of Rionegro (30 minutes from Medellín) we recommend the following forms of transport to the city, available 24/7:

  • Shared Taxi: When you leave the terminal, in the basement of the airport, ask for the shared taxi service. You must wait for all the seats to be occupied (4 passengers) but it usually happens in a maximum of 5 minutes. It has an approximate cost of USD 6,5 ($30,000 COP). The taxi drops passengers off in a central area of the city, from where it is recommended to take a traditional taxi for the final destination of accommodation. In any case, there is a metro station 2 blocks away, but it doesn’t really justify walking around with suitcases, considering that taxis in Medellín are relatively cheap. Important: ask the driver if he is going to Hotel Nutibara or to San Diego. It is recommended to take only the one that goes to San Diego. It is faster and from there you can access the traditional accommodation areas more easily.
  • Private Taxi: It is the most expensive option (USD 25 – $120,000 COP), but of course the most comfortable. It takes you directly to your final accommodation destination.
  • Bus: It is the cheapest alternative (USD 4 – $18,000 COP), but also the slowest, although the difference in time with the shared taxi service is no more than 10-15 minutes. Again, there are two routes, one that goes to the Nutibara Hotel or the other that drops you off in San Diego. The recommendation is the same, choose San Diego.
  • Ride Apps: Are not allowed to leave the airport, although you can use them on your way back.
Now, if you arrived on a regional flight to the local airport Enrique Olaya Herrera (IATA code EOH), the best alternative is to take a taxi to your place of accommodation. The nearest metro station is 1,5 Km away (1 mile) and really not worth the walk.

By Bus...

The city has 2 bus terminals...

If you arrive at the North Terminal, we suggest:

  • Private Taxi:: It is likely that your place of accommodation is about 6 – 12 Kms from the terminal, but even in the most remote case the best option is to take a taxi that will cost you between USD 4 and USD 7 ($16.000 – $28.000 COP).
  • Metro: Now, if you want to start your adventure by taking the famous Medellín Metro, the bus terminal has its own metro station, although it is very likely that from the station where you disembark you will have to take a taxi to the accommodation, which does not make this option very practical. Check Google Maps for the most convenient route.

In case you arrive at the South Terminal, options are:

  • Private Taxi:From here you should be 3 to 10 Kms from your place of accommodation, so a taxi will cost you between USD 3 and USD 5 ($12.000 – $20.000 COP)..
  • Metro: This is not a suggested alternative as the walk is 1.5kms (1 mile), just to take the train, and then another walk…

By Car...

Medellín has 4 main road accesses (north, south, east and west)...

And no matter which of them you enter, keep in mind the following recommendations:

  • ‘Pico y Placa’:It is a restriction on the mobility of private vehicles, according to the last digit of the license plate. It is important that you check the official website of the mayor’s office for the limitation in force at the time of your trip. This is an example for the first semester of 2025:
  • Rush Hours:Expect traffic jams between 7 and 9 a.m. and between 4 and 7 p.m. However, mobility in Medellín is complex throughout the day, so the best suggestion is to leave your car parked and use the services associated with the Medellín Metro system (trains, trams, cable cars and articulated buses).
